The good ending has finally been achieved.

No, but really. I personally love how different donghua feel to anime, and don't mind the top ten being dominated by donghua.

@Serafos It's going to happen if anime continues to shy away from taking risks, and if China loosens up restrictions of ecchi.

With the exception of the first one, all the rest rank high due to their small numbers.

I think donghua has more interesting stories than most anime lately.
Also the animation is really cool.
It's not all of them, but the ones in the top are great.

Notice all the donghua are under 10k members though? Smaller sample size plus dedicated fans means those scores will be boosted (perhaps unfairly?).

But almost no one's really watching those, according to the MAL member count. With the exception of To Be Hero X.

The few people watching those seem to be enjoying them a lot, but the average rating calculated from such a small pool isn't very informative.

Yes chinese donghua is definitely surpassing anime you can tell by the fact they all have less than 10k members and the biased high ratings

I have not been paying attention to Chinese animation at all, but it has been blatantly obvious to anyone who got into the anime hobby that the genre had been on a decline for almost thirty years. The genre peaked in the 80s and early 90s with the most lavishly produced movies and OVAs, and even TV shows with better aesthetics than modern anime. Then the bubble popped and the money has been drying up and the production values declining, with it becoming noticeable during the 2000s with the abandonment of cel painting and then the lost art of complex mecha and creature animation. We went from year long shows to 24 episode shows, and now studios struggle to get out 12 episodes on time and then have to do massive revisions after airing the make them more presentable for home release. The advent of the production committee to fund shows and disperse risk is indicative of anime's decline. By 2010 the bar got pretty low. Sure, you can cherrypick a few shows like FMAB, Fate/Zero that were above average for 2010, but most anime did not meet that standard. China is huge with 2 billion people so the odds are good that someone there could have assembled a studio that could surpass what passes for average in Japan now.

May I ask what you think is unique about them? I have only seen the first one or two seasons of Quanzhi Gaoshou/The King's Avatar about the esports MMO player who starts a smurf account at an internet cafe and competes against his old acquaintances.

The member counts in most of them are very small which contributes to the higher rating.

That's irrelevant. Only those who REALLY enjoy it and commit to it are watching it, which is barely anyone as shown by very low member score.

Let me see:

Tu Bian Yingxiong X was heavily advertised to the western audince.
Tian Guan Cifu - BL stuff...not even an interesting one like Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Doupo Cangqiong: Nian Fan + Tunshi Xingkong 4th Season + Xian Ni + Shen Yin Wangzuo 2nd Season for the people who are bored by battle shounen...being its closest chinese cousin - cultivation, ewww. (I mean, even I follow Doupo Cangqiong, since it's such a guilty pleasure.)

Sorry to butt in, but isn't it kind of obvious? Similar thing as anime - it comes from a different cultural background than ours.
It has different references (because of different traditions and believes) or has different takes on familiar things.
Also different pool of talent.
Of course there will be very similar things, since we live in a (more or less) globalized world, but also there are unique nuances. You just can't generalize those in a simple forum post.

Yea, because their niche fandom rates them high, whereas unbiased viewers usually don't even bother to watch them, that's why their member count is usually too low to be reliable.

@Valyrian1124

The unique part comes from the culture, most donghuas are historical and talk about their legends.

An example of unique stories could be Wu Shan Wu Xing (Fog Hill of Five Elements) about the legend of officials that gain elemental powers, the main character is a banished official that "steals" a beast putting in danger the world. It's very cool, I hope I could say more but that would be full spoiler.
If you preffer a modern setting Link Click has also a great story with mistery and time travel, the main characters have the ability to travel in time through pictures but as the person that took the picture, all the stories revolve around one big mystery, it's amazing.
I also would like to recommend All Saint Street ans Scissor Seven for something more comedic.

Sadly, most old donghuas aren't that interesting or easy to understand without knowing about chinese culture, the newest are far better and have a great animation, but it will be a long way for donghuas to surpass anime, we all know anime is always reinventing itself, we always get some anime that is not like the others, the problem is that we get one unique anime from a sea of hundreds of generic ones.

As @alshu said, it's mostly because it's a different culture, for me it's refreshing getting to see a different type of characters interacting in a new enviroment, hope you get interested!

(sorry for my limited vocabulary, I 'm not a native english speaker) `(*>﹏<*)′

@alshu

I feel it's too early to judge Tu Bian Yingxiong X, but I get that advertisement did it's job for it to get popular, I wonder if it will be as good as it's animation.
And Tian Guan Cifu is more than just BL, it has lots of political and moral topics but the donghua hasn't adapted all the novels yet for the people to see the full panoram, I hope to get a new season :(

I haven't watched the last ones but they did seemed like regular historical and cultivation donghuas, not the best haha.

I am just sharing my hypothesis why it's that popular on MAL, no idea where it will go from here.

MochiGyoza said:

In its first season it had exactly two interesting episodes and the rest was absurdly boring for a person like me who is not into BL.. So that's my impression.
Also maybe Mo Dao Zu Shi has risen the bar a bit too high.

But we are talking about the donghua here, not the web novel source.

Nothing historical about those, they take place in fantasy worlds. Just power creep, power fantasy xianxia.
An example of historical title would be Huo Feng Liao Yuan...but still historical fiction.

Nani? China can deprive the community from watching a nice ecchi title at one's leisure. That's barbaric! 😭

Shocking to some I'm sure, but admittedly it's a pretty low bar to pass..
